Winter Bike Tour—California Desert Escape
For years, we have been searching the state for the ideal location for a Winter bicycle tour. The weather had to be warm and dry, of course. The roads had to be great for cycling, certainly. And to make it an Undiscovered Country tour, the location had to be, essentially, undiscovered—but not so undiscovered as to be without the comforts of civilization. Our search finally has revealed a spot that meets the Undiscovered Country test. Just a short distance away from the major coastal city of San Diego lies the Anza-Borrego Desert, a great dry basin ringed by high mountains. In the center of this large desert park is Borrego Springs, a “quaint desert resort town with no traffic and clean air”. Wide and empty roads stretch across the valley floor with mountain vistas in every direction. But quaint certainly doesn’t mean spartan, as evidened by the opulent 4-diamond rated La Casa del Zorro resort, our base camp for three nights. Warm weather, a quiet town, empty biking roads, great lodging and dining: these are the ingredients that make up an ideal Undiscovered Country trip. And while cycling and relaxing daily in a quaint desert resort town makes for a wonderful tour, we have added a little more variety to keep things interesting. Before arriving in Borrego Springs, we first cycle through the hills and over the mountains east of San Diego, ride along the ridgetop Sunrise Scenic Byway through the Gold Rush town of Julian, then plunge down the twisting Montezuma Valley Road to the desert floor. Then, after three days in the desert, we head once again over the mountains to the Temecula Wine Country, where we spend our final night before returning to San Diego. If you like cycling rides in Winter without multiple layers of fleece and Gore-Tex—and a little luxury doesn’t make you uncomfortable—touring on our California Desert Escape may be just the trip you’ve been looking for. ReservationsThis twice-a-year Winter bicycle tour through warm and sunny Southern California is limited to 12 guests, so we recommend reserving space as early as possible. You may hold your space now, either by phone or online. |
